Stevie Nimmo @ Cottiers 10/3/17

Stevie Nimmo Trio @ Cottiers Theatre, Glasgow The hometown boy returns as part of his Sky Won’t Fall tour and he brings a blues double bill to the beautiful Cottiers Theatre, an old church that has to be one of the most impressive venues in Glasgow. Tonight was about a few firsts for me, the venue for one which is absolutely stunning(check out the photos). Glasgow is fit to bursting with music halls and as much as places like The Hydro, SECC and The Armadillo have their places gimme an old venue any day of the week. My favourite place in the whole world was The old lady herself in The Glasgow Apollo, she was steeped in history and as...

Live Review: Dead Letter Circus @ UniBar, Adelaide, Australia. Review – Craig Grant. Parking in Adelaide is horrendous as we have the Festival, the Fringe and, the celebration of world music, WomAdelaide, all on at the same time. I get to my old stomping ground at the UniBar all set for the tenth anniversary celebration for Dead Letter Circus. The UniBar is a unique venue, looking largely like a tunnel with the band at one end and the mixing desk over the horizon at the other end. The stage always reminds me of the one from Blues Brother, just minus the chicken mesh. Along one length of the room is the bar with the other side being a...

Devilskin @ Think Tank, Newcastle

Devilskin @ Think Tank, Newcastle The venue: When I got to Think Tank I was outside locked doors at 6.30pm and I could hear them doing the final sound checks. I am not sure who it was but the chords and words were “There I was completely wasted out of work and down’. I thought to myself, is that really Judas Priest inside? It was a bloody good impression if it wasn’t. It is the 1st time I have been to Think Tank, Newcastle and it is a nice compact venue, I would call it an up close and personal venue…..ok, small The stage only has 6 spotlights which vary between white, blue and red. As a photographer I was hoping for more white but...

LIVE REVIEW: Fifith and final heat of Northern Ire...

LIVE REVIEW: Fifith and final heat of Northern Ireland’s Metal2TheMasses IT was down to the last four bands to challenge for a spot in the Metal2TheMasses semi-finals, all vying for the chance to battle out for a prized slot at Bloodstock in August – and as always the competition was fierce but friendly in Belfast’s Limelight2 on March 11th. The four bands all had varied style, and all put on an entertaining set in their allotted 30 minutes. There was groove, extreme, shlock and melodic metal on display and the variety only enhanced the experience. What was noticeable was that all the bands had worked hard on their...

Cutlass – EP Review...

Cutlass – EP Review From the moment you put on Cutlass, it will rip through your speakers with its grungy doom sound and with vocalist Lucy Grogan’s dark and wicked siren song, it will blast you to smithereens. The EP starts with Death Bell which is dark and gloomy, and...

Empyre at The Wheatsheaf, High St Oxford. Mar14

Empyre at The Wheatsheaf, High St Oxford.

I’d arrived very early so went for a walk around Oxford. On my return Empyre were already on stage doing a sound-check with Joel. Once that had finished I overheard a rule of The Wheatsheaf, “No Children.” I guessed that a performer had turned up with kids and been refused entry. That came on top of a cancellation – the first in a very very long time for the venue which immediately reduced the running order from four, to two artists. Bugger. On the bill were Ras Brother John, Quarter Melon, Empyre and Juniper Nights. Now, I guessed that Ras Brother John had the admission trouble. I had looked forward to hearing his performance as he is...

Bonafide/ Tequila Mockingbyrd @ 02, ABC, Glasgow

Bonafide/ Tequila Mockingbyrd @ 02, ABC, Glasgow Sweedish rockers Bonafide stroll into Glasgow on the first date of their Flames tour and I have a horrible confession to make…the guys have been at this for over 10 years and I have never seen them live, I know, I hold my head in shame but if you want to know the thoughts of this virgin read on. Before we get to the headline act there is no small matter of the Aussie refugees in Tequila Mockingbryd. After leaving Oz and settling in the UK things definitely seem to be on the up for these girls. I caught them last year on the incredible Aussie Wrecking Crew tour and they instantly...

Live Review: Midge Ure – @ Adelaide, Australia Review: Craig Grant – Last time we saw Midge in town he had a full band in tow and played the thick electronic sound that he is known for with his time with both Ultravox and Visage. This time he has the India Electric Co with him as both the support act and his support band. This tour by Midge is called, ‘Something from Everything’, and is to showcase a song from each of Midge’s fourteen albums. This obviously excludes the plethora of material released from Midge’s website as well as his brief time with Thin Lizzy, but more about that later. The India Electric Co are two blokes...

LIVE REVIEW: Black Star Riders rock Belfast with storming set of BSR songs   THE Black Star Riders have emerged on the other side – the side of living in the shadow of Thin Lizzy: perhaps last year’s festival tour did it. But when BSR landed in Belfast it was more than a homecoming gig for Ricky Warwick, it was when the Riders emerged as a real force in their own right a band whose tunes were known to most of the crowd in a packed Limelight1 on Sunday night (5th March) in the city. Before the main attraction two familiar acts had the Ormeau Avenue not just warmed up, but ready, to coin a phrase, to rock. The power trio of The...

LIVE REVIEW: Heat four of Northern Ireland’s Metal2TheMasses packs Limelight EACH week of this year’s Metal2TheMasses has seen growing numbers attending, and the response from the crowd has been impressive – reacting to what they see on stage. With voting split 50/50 between the judges and the audience sometime the acts that brings enough friends and family along can sway the matter, but on other occasions the sheer level of performance is such that everyone is brought along. And, sometimes stage experience can make a difference… Rookies Gozer The Traveller opened the Heat with a set of tracks that verged from stoner...

Mason Hill/ Massive Wagons @ The Cathouse, Glasgow

Mason Hill/ Massive Wagons @ The Cathouse, Glasgow Welcome to the big time Mason Hill. A hometown headline show that sold out over a month ago. The Cathouse is steeped in rock and metal history in this town. Last year it celebrated its 25th Anniversary and tonight Mason Hill wrote themselves into this legends history books themselves. I have seen all number of bands in this and the previous Cathouse’s venue, large and small and you just need to look at the band names on the steps as you enter to know that some of the biggest bands on the planet at one stage in their career have played this place. Two of those bands in Anthrax and Black...

Blaze Bailey/ Damaj @ Ivory Blacks, Glasgow

Blaze Bailey/ Damaj @ Ivory Blacks, Glasgow Almost a year to the day Blaze Bailey returns to Glasgow to promote his latest album and number two in the Trilogy. Having been at last years gig I am pleased to say there are far more punters here tonight and as his fans can get a bit crazy I was expecting a rowdy night…and I was not disappointed. It is all a bit Deja vu tonight as main support comes from local lads Damaj. I honestly do not know why I am surprised by these guys every single time I see them. I should know by now they consistently push the bar every single gig but tonight there was a huge difference. It has been a...

Twelve Foot Ninja @ Adelaide, Australia.

Live Review – Twelve Foot Ninja @ Adelaide, Australia. Reviewed by Craig Grant: What a night we have lined up tonight with Twelve Foot Ninja touring the colossal, ‘Outlier’ album on the Sick Tour. The ticket says doors at 8pm but we find out that the Ninjas won’t be on stage until 10:45pm. This leads to the bars being chocka and bodies everywhere. Luckily we have a few bands to get things going, but warming up is not too much of an issue as it’s a hot and sticky night in Adelaide. Back to the bar again to hydrate. First up we have Colibrium and this is a first for me as I haven’t come across the band before. They released their first album...

Broken Wit Rebels interview with Danny Core

Broken Wit Rebels interview with Danny Core Hi Danny, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. No, thank you for your support Before we get onto your upcoming Roadstars tour there is no little matter of your support slot on the King King tour. Up here in Scotland we class them as one of our own and Alan and the boys are good friends. How is that tour going and how are you getting on with the boys? The tour is going great, we have learned so much from the guys.We have always admired their music and individually they are a funny bunch of lads. I could not say one bad word about them and music wise you cannot fault them. You have...

Miami Monroe @ Broadcast, Glasgow

Miami Monroe @ Broadcast, Glasgow Following on from a storming set supporting Single By Sunday In January, Miami Monroe take to the stage of Broadcast for a headline set before they set off on a whirlwind UK tour. Support tonight was by One Way Street, Better Days and Not Today and they put on a cracking show each and every one. They were all perfectly suited and this meant that the mostly Miami crowd were happy and I am sure the bands picked up some new fans north of the border. I will certainly be looking out for them when they are back up this way. As much as the support bands were a great teaser tonight was all about Miami...
