Diamond Head and Stormzone hit the Voodoo

LIVE REVIEW: Diamond Head and Stormzone hit the Voodoo with heavy metal thunder and lightning ON a cold Friday night in Belfast in the intimate venue of Voodoo, two sets of rock legends strode onto stage and gave everyone a night to remember. Local heavy rock stalwarts, Stormzone, and the heavy metal godfathers that are Diamond Head. Stormzone filled the stage with their full on hard and heavy rock with a perfectly placed first song, ‘Where we belong’. And that said it all… A tour de force of pure enthusiastic energy they stormed on through ‘Another rainy night’, the anthemic ‘Three Kings’ and on into ‘The Pass Loning’. Each song was a...

LIVE REVIEW: The Undertones stir up some teenage kicks in the Limelight WHEN two local bands play the Limelight and they pack the place out, you know something special is going down. Brand New Friend and The Undertones were a fantastic match, with a youthful Brand New Friend supporting the well experienced The Undertones. Brand New Friend, a quirky upbeat outfit from Castlerock, is Taylor and Lauren Johnson, Aaron Milligan and Luke Harris. Their set for the night set alight the stage and the audience with their energy. Starting off with “Why Are You So Tired?”, “Seatbelts For Aeroplanes” and “I Was An Astronaut” the tone was well and truly...

ALBUM REVIEW: Sumptu...

ALBUM REVIEW: Sumptuous, elegant, edgy eloquence from majestic Magnum on album #20 BY now you would expect veterans like Magnum to be calling in their albums, dialled straight in, with all the formula expected. Not for the Brummie rockers. Nope, this is a band that have a distinctive sound,...

LIVE REVIEW: Jimmy Barnes – When a Working Class Man storms the Limelight Dec21

LIVE REVIEW: Jimmy Barnes – When a Working C...

LIVE REVIEW: Jimmy Barnes – When a Working Class Man storms the Limelight TWO acts and one whole massive show of soul, blues and rock ‘n’ roll stormed in the Limelight in the forms of Lachlan Doley and the rock legend that is Jimmy Barnes. Lachlan was up first and he is a true live soulful blues singing wonder to behold. Watching him as he plays the Hammond organ as he impossibly genuflects out of it soul and blues music of epic proportions. It is a true pleasure to behold. He seems to be a hyperactive Duracell bunny crossed with Kurt Cobain and it is utterly infectious. As he powered into his set, the crowd were presented...

HRH N.W.O.B.H.M Sheffield 3/12/17

HRH N.W.O.B.H.M Sheffield 3/12/17 Day two. Started off in stage one to a bit of a downer, the band Airrace should have been on, but we heard that one of the member’s sister had passed away and they were therefore not playing. So everyone was upstairs for stage two veterans Seventh Son. Formed in 1980 by brothers Kev, and Oliver Dawson’s Saxon frontman Bri Shaughnessey, now in their 37th year they have been a big part of the NWOBHM scene and still play with as much enthusiasm as ever. Kev emigrated to Australia in 1988, but Bri’s passion for performing keeps the band alive and after going through a number of changes the band of Bri,...

HRH N.W.O.B.H.M. 2/12/17. Dec06

HRH N.W.O.B.H.M. 2/12/17.

HRH N.W.O.B.H.M. 2/12/17. Welcome to Sheffield the steel city, but the for the next two days at the O2 Arena this was going to the city of metal. NWOBHM, or the new wave of British heavy metal: this legendary genre spawned the likes of Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and many others who have gone on to have major fame. This festival was going to be a mixture of the old and the young who have been keeping this music alive, many since the middle seventies and early eighties. The first few bands of the day were going to be in Stage Two and kicking off at 2pm in the afternoon was going to be no mean feat. But TOLEDO STEEL, Southampton...

SILENCE THE RADIO RELEASE EP “FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD NIGHTMARES” Dec06

SILENCE THE RADIO RELEASE EP “FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOO...

PROVIDENCE, RI – Out of Providence, Rhode Island, four-piece alternative pop punk band Silence The Radio have released their brand new EP “Friendly Neighborhood Nightmares,” out TODAY. With the development of “Friendly Neighborhood Nightmares,” the band realized that their biggest strength was their ability to write songs with a catchy, flowing chorus, while still retaining the dark, tongue-in-cheek lyrical style they had originally honed. Aside the title track, The EP includes the theatrical “Sad Love Story,” a tribute to the mid 2000’s alternative scene. Although a modern pop punk band, Silence The Radio incorporates beautiful...

HRH VIKINGS UNLEASH A VALHALLA ADVENTURE IN THE CITY OF STEEL What’s that circling in the stormy skies? Hugin and Munin: Odin’s own ravens. And what surges through the wind, waves and tempest below them at the horizon, lit by flashes of lightning? Dragon prows, longboats and warriors bold,...

Winter storm day 2 Dec05

Winter storm day 2

Winter Storm Festival Day Two Day two started a lot slower than day one. Due to me being wired to the moon like a kid on blue smarties after a hell of a day I was not ready to settle down for bed so I partook in Troon’s ambience, lovely people and very late pub licenses. That is as much of the detail as you are getting but lets just say it meant I was not up at the crack of dawn, jogging along the beach. This is all part of festival life but the issue here is I can usually turn up at a festival any old time and no one notices. Unfortunately for me my good friends and two of the best upcoming bands in Anchor lane and Black King Cobra...

Winter Storm festival, Day One Nov29

Winter Storm festival, Day One

Winter Storm festival, Day One Well this was a first, getting up for a rock festival to be met with snow. It is Scotland and it is winter so what do you expect? Luckily there is no camping and the event is indoors. I realise not many people outside of Scotland will have heard of this festival but after this years event word of mouth will spread the news far and wide. It is set in the beautiful town of Troon(yes, the place with the famous golf course), right on the coast with the venue overlooking the sea. It may have been cold but the scenery was stunning just like the weekend. The weather caused the usual chaos and meant that I...

The band will also be playing 3 large outdoor summer shows with a rotating bill including The Selecter, The Beat and Buzzcocks. Stiff Little Fingers live shows are always special events. None is more special than the band’s annual sold out St Patrick’s Day show held at the famous Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow.  2018 will see the band celebrate their 27th year in a row playing there. Last year the band celebrated their 40th anniversary, with what is now one of their most...

With the World Tour Coming to an End, What’s Next ...

With the World Tour Coming to an End, What’s Next for Guns N’ Roses? In early 2016 the original Guns N’ Roses (minus rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin) finally reunited, stepping on stage together after many years for two weekend gigs at the famed Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Those two shows, evidently, were just a preview of the bigger act that would follow: a whirlwind multi-city tour across five continents aptly dubbed “Not in This Lifetime.” The band’s tour has been a massive hit, with <a...

Airbourne @ 02 Academy, Glasgow Nov22

Airbourne @ 02 Academy, Glasgow

Airbourne @ 02 Academy, Glasgow The ever touring Airbourne are back in Glasgow. You can always expect a spectacle but is tonight one too many shows for me? Before we get to the headliners we have the awesome Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons. I caught this band for the first time last year and tonight this was the main reason I was here. The band impressed me no end that night. To see the legend that is Phil inches from me in a sweaty venue was awesome…and it had one large advantage over tonight, the sound. I do not know if it was Airbourne’s mass of amps that even flooded onto the floor of the photo pit but man was the sound...

Alice Cooper in Glasgow Nov20

Alice Cooper in Glasgow

Alice Cooper @ SSE Hydro, Glasgow Well, Mr Furnier strolls into Glasgow to what is probably the largest capacity he has ever played here. Bringing an incredible show and some very old friends we have either not seen for a long time or ever before. When this show was announced there were a few upturned noses at the support chosen. They are not what you would expect for an Alice show but for me The Tubes were a perfect choice. I was a massive fan back in the day and over the last two years I have been going to their headline shows in this city. With a front man like Fee Waybill you have a showman made in Alice’s image. He may not go for the...

Kane’d/ Stoneface @ Hard Rock Cafe, Glasgow Nov19

Kane’d/ Stoneface @ Hard Rock Cafe, Glasgow

Kane’d/ Stoneface @ Hard Rock Cafe, Glasgow Once again Shock City done Glasgow proud. They put on consistently good shows and tonight was no different. They are a great place to see the new talent that Glasgow has to offer and for that they should be congratulated. In a world that is all about money they are happy to use funds from other events to ensure Glasgow gets it’s fill of new music. Tonight we have the very experienced Stoneface on first. The boys brought their A game and a huge chunk of the crowd which may partly be due to singer Stewart ”twinkle toes” Storrie’s birthday. He also requested no presents and money to be donated...

HRH day 3 Nov19

HRH day 3

HRH XI Day 3 After all the fun and games last night and chatting to the people saying that the capacity was too much in stage one even dangerous at times, I looked at the programme and noticed stage two today were showcasing all the rising stars, interesting to review and probably safer. Missed the first band so started with Western Sand. Formed in 2012 this band have rapidly built a reputation for themselves playing classic southern rock with an energetic and powerful performance. These Bournemouth lads can only go from strength to strength, the second stage was packed out and I had a feeling it was going to be like that all day....

BIGFOOT HARD ROCK CAFE GLASGOW Nov15

BIGFOOT HARD ROCK CAFE GLASGOW

Bigfoot @ The Hard Rock Cafe, Glasgow Hot on the heels of their recently released debut album Bigfoot came to Glasgow to reaffirm their dominance in the city. As well as the party band with big hits we are treated to two young and seriously talented local bands with the first of the night Black King Cobra. If you are a regular reader of this site you know how much I rate this band. We are nearly at the end of the year so I have no doubt they will stay my find of 2017. I spoke to a few people who had not seen the band prior to tonight and every one has the same reaction. A band filled with talent, possibly the tallest drummer in the world, a...
